Yoga & Sound Retreats: The Complete 2026 Guide

A yoga retreat is three to ten days of structured practice, usually with accommodation and meals included, at prices that run from under $50 for an ashram weekend in Rishikesh to $4,000 and up for a luxury wellness week in the Algarve. A sound retreat adds gongs, singing bowls, chimes and guided listening to that structure. This guide covers what the different types actually involve, what they honestly cost, and how to pick one that fits you rather than one that photographs well.

We sell handcrafted chimes, so sound is our home ground. We wrote this series because so many of our customers told us the same thing: the chime on the balcony started something, and now they want a week of it.

What types of retreat can you book?

This article contains affiliate links. If you book a retreat through them, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. It never affects the price you pay. Read our full disclosure.

The word "retreat" covers at least five quite different holidays. It helps to know which one you are actually shopping for.

Type Typical length Typical price Best for
Yoga and meditation 3 to 8 days $200 to $1,500 First timers, a general reset
Sound healing 3 to 7 days $200 to $700 Anyone drawn to gongs, bowls and deep rest
Silent retreats 4 to 12 days $450 to $1,400 Experienced meditators, burnout recovery
Digital detox 4 to 12 days $400 to $1,200 Screen fatigue, sleep problems
Teacher training (200hr) 20 to 29 days $550 to $2,500 Serious students, career changers

Prices are "from" prices for shared rooms and they move with seasons and exchange rates, so check the listing for current availability. The pattern holds though: India and Southeast Asia cost a fraction of Europe and the Americas, and silence costs more than chatter because group sizes are smaller.

What does a retreat really cost?

The booking price is usually half your real spend. Flights, travel insurance, tips, airport transfers and the odd massage add up. A working rule from our own trips: take the listing price, add your flights, then add 20 percent. A $300 ashram week in Rishikesh can still end up a $1,100 trip from the US East Coast. A $750 week in Portugal might total $1,400. Suddenly Europe looks closer than it did.

Two honest examples from the current listings: the 8 day Relax, Restore and Unwind retreat in Rishikesh starts from about $285, meals and room included, which is less than a weekend hotel stay in most US cities. At the other end, the 8 day silent retreat on Sardinia with a private sea view room runs from about $1,335. Both are well reviewed. They are simply different holidays.

We break this down properly, with a full cost table by region, in How Much Does a Yoga Retreat Cost?

What happens at a sound focused retreat?

Sound retreats build on a simple observation: sustained, harmonic sound gives a busy mind something to rest on. A typical day pairs morning yoga with an evening sound session. You lie down, usually wrapped in a blanket, while a practitioner plays gongs, crystal or Himalayan bowls, chimes and sometimes voice, for 45 to 90 minutes. People routinely fall asleep. That is allowed.

There are over 1,400 retreats with a sound healing element listed on BookYogaRetreats right now, from a 4 day sound healing and yoga retreat in Rishikesh (from about $390, rated 4.9 from 72 reviews) to a 4 day Bali retreat that mixes sound healing with temple culture (from about $335, 4.75 from 616 reviews). If you want to understand the instruments before you go, we compare them in Gong Bath vs Sound Bath vs Singing Bowls.

How do you choose your first retreat?

Four questions sort most of it out.

1. Silence or company? If the idea of five days without talking makes you curious rather than anxious, read what actually happens at a silent retreat first. If it makes you anxious, book a social retreat. Corfu and Bali are full of them.

2. Near or far? Long haul flights eat two days and a chunk of budget. Europe based? Portugal is the obvious first pick, and we listed eight worth the flight. US based? Costa Rica is the closest serious retreat culture, though the real prices deserve a straight look.

3. Beginner friendly or immersive? Plenty of retreats genuinely welcome people who have done ten yoga classes in their life. We collected the best of them in our beginner guide to Europe. Traveling alone? The solo female guide covers safety and the retreats where solo travelers are the norm, not the exception.

4. A week away, or a new direction? If you keep circling teacher training pages, read our honest cost breakdown of the 200 hour YTT before you commit a month of your life. And if a certification in sound itself is the draw, here is what sound healing training actually buys you.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be good at yoga to go on a retreat?

No. Most retreats teach mixed level classes and over 1,800 listings are explicitly beginner friendly. Tell the organizer your level when you enquire; a good one will tell you honestly whether the week fits.

How far in advance should I book?

Two to four months for popular seasons (spring in Portugal, winter in Costa Rica and India). Enquiring costs nothing and does not commit you; most organizers hold your spot for a few days once you enquire.

Are retreats worth it compared to a normal holiday?

If you come home from normal holidays tired, probably yes. The structure does the work: fixed practice times, no cooking, no planning, early nights. It is the least effortful holiday you will take.

What is the difference between a yoga retreat and a sound retreat?

A yoga retreat centers movement with some quiet practice. A sound retreat centers listening: gongs, bowls and chimes in dedicated sessions, with gentler yoga around them. Many retreats now blend both.
